What is PCN Full Form in Medical?
The PCN Full form in medical term is Percutaneous Nephrostomy. A drainage catheter is percutaneously inserted into the renal collecting system during a percutaneous nephrostomy, an interventional radiology operation. PCN has emerged as the go-to option for the temporary and occasionally permanent drainage of a clogged upper urinary system since the first paper detailing this operation was published in 1955.
Indications for performing PCN:
Percutaneous nephrostomy is typically performed for conditions such as blockage of the urinary system.pee diversion, including ureteric lesions and pee leaks. For performing certain procedures that requires access by percutaneous procedures such as ureteric antegrade stenting. The procedure also helps in diagnosing certain conditions such as antegrade pyelography, Whitaker examination, etc.
How is the procedure performed?
In order to drain urine, a tube is surgically placed through the skin into the kidney during a percutaneous nephrostomy. Although general anesthesia may be utilized in certain situations, the treatment is typically performed under local anesthetic with conscious sedation. The radiologist locates the kidney and the site of the needle insertion using fluoroscopy or ultrasound. A needle is passed into the kidney through the skin. To ensure correct implantation, contrast dye may be injected. A catheter is used in place of the needle once a guidewire has been installed. To collect the urine, this catheter is subsequently affixed to the skin and connected to an external drainage bag.
