PCD Full Form in Medical

What is PCD Full Form in Medical?

The PCD Full form in medical term is Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia. It is an uncommon genetic condition marked by aberrant ciliary structure and function, which impairs cilia movement. Cells in the reproductive system, respiratory tract, and other areas of the body include hair-like structures called cilia. Cilia dysfunction in PCD patients causes a number of health problems, especially in the respiratory system, including sinusitis, persistent respiratory infections, and, in certain situations, situs inversus.

Causes of PCD:

PCD is primarily a genetic disorder. A person must inherit two copies of the faulty gene one from each parent in order to develop PCD, which is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive form. In healthy people, mucus and other particles are moved out of the respiratory system by the synchronized wave-like beating of motile cilia, which aids in infection prevention and cleaning.

Symptoms and manifestations of PCD:

Frequent bronchitis, recurring ear infections, and chronic sinusitis are caused by inefficient mucus clearance. This condition, in which the airways become permanently enlarged and scarred, can be brought on by persistent inflammation and infection. From infancy onward, patients frequently experience persistent nasal congestion and a chronic cough that generates mucus. Because of mucus accumulation, many babies with PCD have trouble breathing soon after birth.
