What is the Full Form of LOP in Medical?
The Full Form of LOP in Medical term is Left Occipitoposterior. A fetal posture during labor and delivery is referred to as LOP. It explains how the fetus is oriented in relation to its mother’s pelvis. It is thefetal posture during labor where the head of the infant is facing to the left of the pelvis of the mother. The results of birth and the labor process may be impacted by this position.
Clinical Importance of the LOP Configuration:
- Back Labor: When the head of the child presses upon the mother’s spinal cord during contractions, the lower back hurts a lot.
- Extended Labor: Compared to anterior postures (such as left occipitoanterior, or LOA), the LOP is less advantageous for delivery.
- Higher Interventions Risks: If the baby does not spin around, there is a greater chance that a cesarean section or aided delivery (forceps, vacuum) will be required.
- Following labor, newborns in the LOP position typically rotate to anterior position.
- A “sunny-side-up” birth, in which the infant comes out face-up (occipitoposterior), may result from a lack of rotation.
