PFN Full Form in Medical

What is the Full Form of PFN in Medical?

The Full Form of PFN in Medical term is the Proximal Femoral Nail. In the year 1997, PFN was created to treat (per) trochanteric fractures; it has since been replaced by the PFNA. This particular orthopedic device is frequently employed in the surgical correction of specific hip and femur fractures, especially those that affect the upper portion of the thigh bone (femur). Particularly in elderly individuals who may have weaker bones due to osteoporosis, the PFN is commonly utilized for intertrochanteric & subtrochanteric femur fractures, which are fractures near the hip joint.

Significant features of PFN:

  • PFN is made to hold the shattered bone fragments in place while they mend, thereby stabilizing proximal femur fractures.
  • It is frequently applied to unstable fractures where plating and other conventional techniques might not offer enough stabilization.
  • For individuals who are elderly or have fragile bones, PFN offers a more functionally stable option because of its intramedullary (inside the bone) implantation.
  • The PFN is made up of an extended nail that inserts into the femoral shaft & screws that secure the bone fragments by traversing the nail and through the femoral head.
